Grand Keepers are elected to two-year terms and meet bi-monthly. Nationally, the sorority is governed by a thirteen-member board known as the Grand Keepers of the Circle. With more than 130 tribes represented by its members, the sorority has more than 900 sisters nationwide. The sorority was incorporated with the State of North Carolina in 1995 and expanded to additional campuses.
Its first pledge class was called the Fifteen Warrior Women. The sorority's founding principles are traditionalism, spirituality, education, and contemporary issues. Before forming the group, they sought and received the approval of elder women from the various tribes of North Carolina. The founders, now known to as the Four Winds, are Shannon Brayboy ( Lumbee), Jamie Goins ( Lumbee), Amy Locklear (Lumbee and Coharie), and Christie Strickland ( Lumbee).

Girls with diverse interests and backgrounds come from hometowns all over the country to share a wonderful four years together at UGA.This article is about the Native American sorority, Alpha Pi Omega. AOIIs love taking time to get involved in the community by volunteering for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Athens Regional Hospital, Piedmont Athens Regional, Mercy Health Center, YMCA, and Habitat for Humanity, as well as by mentoring and coaching at local Athens schools.Ī visible characteristic of this group of women is their sincere ability to remain honest and true to themselves. The chapter hosts a variety of events throughout the year to raise money for and to spread awareness of juvenile arthritis. AOIIs have been honored as the 2006, 2008, and 2011 Homecoming Queens, 20 UGA Idols, 2011 SGA President, 2021 SGA Treasurer.ĪOII’s national philanthropy, the Juvenile Arthritis Foundation, remains close to the hearts of the girls in the Lambda Sigma chapter. Members have active roles in UGA Athletics, participating in Cheerleading and Club Tennis and serving on the Georgettes and Dance Dawgs teams. AOII is represented in the Red and Black Newspaper, Dawg Camp, Georgia Recruitment Team, Student Government Association, and Visitors Center Staff. Perhaps most characteristic of the chapter is its deep involvement in campus organizations. Members are active in Freshley Foundation, YoungLife, WyldLife, Freshman Orientation, Arch Society, Crossroads, and Institute for Leadership Advancement, and many also serve as both Grady and Terry Ambassadors. AOII is represented on the executive boards of UGA Miracle, HEROS, ESP, CURE UGA, Relay for Life, and Roteract. Leadership is also a high priority among members of AOII. Members are involved in the UGA Honors program, Order of Omega, Tate Society, and Foundation Fellow. AOII takes great pride in academics and consistently holds one of the highest grade point averages among all UGA sororities. The Lambda Sigma chapter, chartered in 1935, stands to uphold the high standards of academic excellence, leadership, involvement, and genuine friendships. Founded in New York by four accomplished women, Alpha Omicron Pi has expanded to 109 chapters nationwide.
